Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
