This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
