Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
